This is a clear example of using God's name in vain.
Stephen Curry is reportedly a Christian and even if he was not these words of God out of these Psalms were used contrary to God's intentions.
The correct context of what taking the name of the Lord in vain goes much deeper such as misrepresenting God's name by incorrectly using His Words to further your own agendas or satiate your own desires. In essence when you do this you are making a false god that says things that you want him to say verses what the one true Living God actually said. In doing this one violates two of God's commandments.
In reality the God of LeBron and the NBA and many if not all of their fanatics is Basketball. Broad indeed is the road to destruction. The truth here will bring much hate towards me but it must be noted that I was not the one who said to set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2), God did.
In regards to the case reported in the link below, God is not at all concerned about basketball.
There are souls heading to hell. There are souls that need reconciling back to their Creator.
There are more important things that God is involved in than trivial bouncing balls.
LeBron James Invokes Imprecatory Psalms Against Curry, Warriors In Postgame Interview
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.Exodus 20:4-7
