My ten year old son ventured into this field of questioning today as he is learning everyone's favorite, fractions.
I asked him, due to the bewildered look on his face, if he was wondering why he would ever need to learn this stuff and if he would ever need it in life.
The answer specific to his question could have been easy as fractions themselves are very vital to know if you are ever going to cook, build things, tip after a nice meal at a restaurant, etc.
But I wanted to give the most important answer that encompasses all of math and not just fractions.
I told my son that math is a look inside of the mind of God. Things such as math, logic, laws of nature, etc...are abstract which means they are non-material. They have no mass, no physical substance. They are conceptual and absolutely universal throughout nature.
Evolutionary thinking tries to rationalize their existence and claim that they are but conventions, the product of matter reacting. In reality evolution in and of itself cannot account for math, logic and the laws of nature.
Evolutionists thus are relegated to mere assumptions that math, logic and the laws of nature are reliable when in fact, within a theory that demands a premise of unpredictable random chaos, they are taking a much unjustified leap of faith by doing so.
Math as seen at the most simplest of levels never evolves. 1 + 1 always equals 1. Just as in logic, 1 and 1 always is 1. This at it's very core conflicts with the demands of the so-called theory of evolution. These simply do not evolve, ever.
The Christian's world view can answer to the existence of these things as they are rooted from the very mind of an omniscient, omnipresent and all powerful Creator. They give us an insight into the very mind of God. This is the very reason why it is beneficial to study all of these to greatest of our potentials. The fact that these, math, logic and natural laws all around give us much help throughout life in tangible and varying ways is but a side benefit.
Knowing the mind of God is the real reason why we should want to learn more in these areas.
