Many take this verse out of context so often and most have no idea they are doing this. Thus the intention of the verse is not only watered down but it is actually distorted.
Yes, in this case, the context does matter.
A lot in fact.
Today is not the day our LORD hung on the cross to suffer incredibly while taking on death in our behalf so that we could have eternal life.
That day happened around two thousand years ago.
That day is not today.
That was ‘the day’ that the Psalmist was excited about as he looked forward to the coming Saviour.
This is absolutely no trivial matter because no other day holds more importance to any sinner that has ever lived before or after that one specific day. That includes each and every one of us today and for all time.
Without that day we all deserve to go to hell, eternally separated from our Father.
Only because of that one particular day can anyone be saved and live forever with the Father.
One must take in more than just verse 24 in order to understand the full context.
Here are verses 21 through 24 for reference:
I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:21-24
