I am studying up on foraging lately and came across this one.
It is the only naturally occurring (native) source of caffeine in Texas’ landscape.
While researching it I found a funny fact on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilex_vomitoria) regarding it’s unusual and gross name.
Yes, it is derived from the Latin which we use in our modern day English as ‘vomit’.
The reason for this name was that the highly educated Europeans when they witnessed the Native American’s using the tea made from the Yaupon holly’s leaves it was accompanied with a ritualistic vomiting that the Europeans falsely associated with the tea.
I know some people who have similar reactions to the truth but it really is not the truth that causes their issues but that is another discussion for another time.
